Improving communities is central to our purpose. We aim to make a positive contribution through our construction projects, through our role as an employer and through work with subcontractors and our supply chain.

Creating Social Value

We work hard to improve the quality of the communities in which we build. We work in partnership to leave a legacy that lasts beyond construction and ‘Social Value’ is the added impact resulting from our activities.

We are committed to giving something back by investing in the local economy and community to encourage social, economic and environmental regeneration. As a result, we have added value to the quality of our environment, the wellbeing of our employees and the sustainability of our supply chain.

Our Social Value activity

We carry out social value work with:

  • Schools and colleges
  • Charities and good causes
  • Social enterprises
  • Community groups
  • Prisons
  • Housing associations

Waste recycling

Rather than pass responsibility to a waste handling company, Lindum takes full responsibility for its waste.

We have invested £5m in our own in-house waste transfer station in Saxilby, and have an ongoing programme of capital improvements.

We are currently the largest waste organisation in Lincolnshire, owning over 400 skips and a fleet of vehicles to collect wastage. In 2019, we diverted 99 per cent of waste from landfill and recycled 80 per cent.

Apprenticeships and training

Lindum runs an award-winning apprenticeship, trainee and graduate programme. We invest in ‘growing our own staff’, attracting young people to our business and providing ongoing training. 20 per cent of our current workforce has progressed through our apprentice and trainee schemes.

We currently have 13 apprentices and trainees most of which are being supported by the company in doing college and degree courses.

Working with schools

Lindum completed work at four schools in Nottingham, including Rufford Primary School, via the Scape Regional Construction framework.

The projects generated more than £167,200 of additional ‘social value’ for the schools and their local communities.

This included the positive financial impact of using local subcontractors, social enterprises and apprentices on projects as well as the value of added extras, such as the donation of timber play equipment to the schools.

Working with charities

We support many local charities and good causes, both through donations and fundraising and practical assistance.

During 2019, we contributed to 81 different causes, included Macmillan Cancer Support, Alzheimer’s Society and Kids Lincolnshire. In total, almost £29,000 was donated charity.

Our causes are chosen by our employees who want to make a difference.

Creating 'added value' through construction...

Using social value calculators, we can try to measure the added value generated during building projects, such as the impact of sourcing local labour on local employment, the value of employing apprentices, the benefits of working with local merchants and suppliers etc.

When we handed over Grantham’s new University Centre, the social impact as measured by the calculator was £636,560 (85% of the contract value), and we also donated a life-saving defibrillator to our client and commissioned not-for-profit Pelican Trust to build a wooden bench that will be installed in a nearby recreation area.
